Description

In this course we will explore how society and culture in the Arab World are represented in articles and brief video or audio files in Arabic from al-Jazeera and other news sites. We will work on material about the Levantine countries (Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan) and Iraq, Egypt and Sudan, the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya), and the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait). Students will focus on understanding vocabulary and grammar, articulating the points of view that are represented in the news story or editorial commentary, and considering the social, political, and cultural context of each selection. Students who have completed ARB 121, or have equivalent Arabic skills and the instructor’s permission are welcome. Evaluation will be based on participation in class discussion of articles, videos, and audio files, completion of written several sets of discussion questions in class, two vocabulary quizzes, one one-page composition, and one two-page composition. The goal of the course is for students to develop skills to understand, analyze, discuss, and write about news media in Arabic.
